Heaven Welcomes A New Angel.

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our dear friend and co-worker Cindy Hawke. She passed away after a valiant fight of breast cancer. You are free to fly now Angel-Cindy. Fly High and decorate the Heavens with your beautiful smile. You will NEVER be forgotten. We love you.

Cindy was a fighter and showed her inner strength and determination to fight this disease every day. I will never forget the text message she sent to me after our last breast cancer walk, the one that she was able to be a special part of. Every step of the walk was a testament of how important our job is ... how important it is to keep on fighting when those we love are unable to fight any more. Every time cancer saps the last bit of life out of my friends, my loved ones, I am compelled to fight EVEN MORE!!!

In Cindy's own words that she text to me, "For me the walk was the greatest gift of hope and strength I could never have even imagined. I feel so blessed knowing that I am not alone." -Cindy Hawke

Thank you to EVERYONE who supports the 911 Angels & our mission to make a difference. I want to empower everyone to consider joining our team as a future walker, crew member, team supporter and come train and fundraise with us. Let those like Cindy know that they are not alone.

Come Cheer Us On ..

Dear Family and Friends,

We are off. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement through this meaningful life journey ...

We invite you to become a part of our adventure by joining us in San Francisco this weekend because it's such a great feeling to see our friends and family on the side lines of the route cheering us. See us off at Opening Ceremonies on Saturday morning, a heartwarming ceremony that reminds us why we walk ... We want to see you at the 6th mile and the 10th mile, and the 13th mile and the 19th mile and the 23rd mile and most definitely as we walk into closing ceremonies on Sunday. Check out the following link to the cheering stations:

Cheering Stations.

Hope to see ya there!

The 911 Angels!

We Are Ready!

Hi Ladies,

Congratulations!!! We have each met our minimum goal of at least $1,800.00 and some of you far and beyond that goal. Our team has currently raised $27,111.00 !!! Keep soliciting last minute donations with the hope that our team can and will raise 30k in the fight against breast cancer.

Remember to start / keep hydrating and get lots of sleep tonight and through Friday.

I'm stopping into work later tonight to drop off sweatshirts for fire. If you would prefer to wash yours before packing, please call my cell and make arrangements to pick your sweatshirt up at my home tonight.

I'll meet all PD team members in PAB plot at 1300 hrs Friday.

I'm shooting for dinner reservations for 1800 hrs at Cheesecake Factory in Union Square or as soon as Fire team members are finished registering.

Active Walkers:

Tara Doxie, Linda Doering, Amy Camarillo, Denise Murillo, Sandra Stultz, Marie Silva-Martinez, Teresa Zagalo, Jennifer Burnham and Tracy Deitschman.

This year, as in past we personally walk for so many special people who have been affected by breast cancer. As a team, we are dedicating our 2008 walk in support of our dear friend and co-worker Cindy Hawke. We are fortunate that Cindy Hawke will also be with us this year and will be there cheering us on from the sidelines. She will be saving all her energy for the final walk into closing ceremonies. :)

Other team members who will be cheering us on from the side (and much needed) are Gina Hardesty, Brandon Hardesty, Jennifer Arata, Marissa Wedge, Stacey Jordan, Onne Keys, Cindy, Rahul and my family.

For those of you don't know, my son made the All Star baseball team. The sad part is the tournament starts this weekend in Morgan Hill. My husband will be at Opening Ceremonies to see us off and to take our team pictures before heading back to Morgan Hill. Keep your fingers crossed that my sons team wins Saturdays game because then they will be with us all day on Sunday... if they lose they have to play Sunday and they won't be able to drive up on Sunday.

Team Shirts:
Friday - White
Saturday - Black
Sunday - Pink

Lastly, I wanted to send a special thank you to all of you who fundraised and trained so hard in preparation for this 2008 walk. This team has been the most independent thus far, taking personal responsibility and finding the drive within yourselves to ensure your minimum donations were raised.

I also wanted to send out a prayer request for Shirly Paugh. A special team mate of ours who joined our team, never having met us but wanting to walk in support of her dear niece (our friend) Cindy Hawke. Shirley joined our team many months ago and raised her money quickly successfully banking $2,700.00 into her account. She also helped raise money for Cindy's account. Shirley trained diligently in preparation for the Avon Walk before suffering an aneurism where she lives in Iowa. She is currently in the hospital recovering and will obviously not be with us the weekend. I ask that you keep her your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Prayer requested also for Linda Doering's sister in law who was also just diagnosed with breast cancer and will be starting treatment within the next couple of weeks.

Please send email to your family and friends inviting them to Opening / Closing ceremonies and a link to the Cheering Stations.

Because as you all know, it pays to have those you love on the side lines showing their support by cheering you on!

See ya'll tomorrow.

Keep on stepping ladies, You Rock!

911 Angels Relay For Life

We want EVERYONE to know what our team has done to fight back.

1. The theme for our campsite is simply "911 Angels" that which is us. San Jose Fire and Police Dispatchers, family and friends. We will decorate with team banners, pink, pink, pink, our logo.

2. Our team will advocate a specific form of cancer: Breast Cancer. The need for self exams and the fact that men are at risk of breast cancer as well.

3. Our team slogans: "Be sure to check for lumps, keep your lovely lady humps!!" and "Go hands on, Check your man!" hahahaha! I have the perfect photo for that poster!!!

4. Our team activity: A Water Boobie Relay which we will run. We need Bra Donations, so go through your drawers, bag em and bring em to the relay.

5. During the course of the week, if you have time please decorate or make a few 911 Angels banners or posters using either the above slogan or something similar advocating breast cancer. This is a great kid activity, so get your children involved.

Tis gonna be a FUN FUN weekend!

Happy Trails,

Tara Doxie

Fundraisers for Avon Walk and Relay For Life

Current Avon Walk Fundraisers

1. Toast For a Cure Wine Benefit is TONIGHT.
2. Control Room and Online Silent Auction closes tonight at 2100 hours.
3. SJPD Team Donation Challenge runs until next Friday.
4. 911 Angel Tshirts will arrive next Friday and will continue to sell until sold out.

Yes, our decision to participate in the Relay For Life was last moments notice but we are prepared to take this head on!
The Relay is 1 week and 1 day away so continue collecting donations both online and offline. We will be able to turn in donations even after the event. Here is our current plan of action for fundraising for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life:

1. Luminaria Sales and Bag Decorating will begin on Friday, June 20th. (see control room display for more details) Donations are $10 for each Luminaria bag. What is Luminaria you ask? A Luminaria is simply a bag with sand in the bottom, and a candle placed in the bag to illuminate it. Each bag represents an individual story of a struggle with cancer. Every Luminaria bears the name of a person afflicted by cancer and the one who honors them. When the sun goes down, the candles are lit and light the way throughout the night. The Luminaria Ceremony is the soul of Relay for Life. At dusk, we quietly remember those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Candles in white bags line the track, each bearing the name of a loved one. In the soft glow of the candlelight, we reflect on the courage and strength of all who are affected by cancer.

2. The rest of our fundraising will be at the Relay itself. We will set up camp and have items for sale: Baked Goods, Tshirts, Pink Ribbon Jewelry, Pink Ribbon Visor Caps, and 911 Angel Cookbooks, Lemonade and Water Bottles.

3. The SJPD Team Donation Challenge gave the officers an option of either donating to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer or the American Cancer Society. The challenge will end on July 27th.

Relay For Life - June 28th

In addition to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, The 911 Angels are reaching new horizons. We have decided to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, raising money in the fight against ALL cancers. The Relay weekend is fast approaching. A big heartfelt thank you to you to those of you who have expressed an interest about being a part of our relay team!! Thank you to those who have already registered. Don't forget it costs not a thing to register but once you do, send a message using your personal online webpage to your family and friends letting them know that you will be participating. After-all, the purpose of the relay is to raise money for all cancers. As a registered participant, you will receive a Relay 4 Life Tshirt, so be sure to follow this link and register as one of our official team members.

For the walk, we will be wearing 911 Angel Tshirts. If you bought a tshirt last year (pink or black) you may wear one of those. If you need to order a new one, let me know asap so everyone knows your part of our team while we take over that Leland track!!! :)

There are a few things I need from the team. Please look below at what I need and email me if you can help out with the following:

1. From everyone, I need to know what your time commitment is. Will you be with us the entire day or just part of it and if so, what time or how long will you be able to walk? For the walking schedule, do you prefer (hour walks spread out throughout the day) or (a 2-3 hour time slot) and then be done?

2. We will need about 4 pop up tents for our team area. We will also need ice chests as well. If you or a friend or family member has any pop up tents or ice chests we can borrow, please let me know asap. :)

3. Our team is able to sell things at our booth to raise money for the relay. I will be selling 911 Angel Tshirts and pink ribbon visors, charm bracelets and visor clips and I think I have a few 911 Angel cookbooks too. Are you able to bring and sell a certain craft? cookies? bake sale? or make lemonade ?? open to any other ideas ...

4. Set up and break down crew. I will need at least 5 people to help set up on Saturday morning at 7am and at least 5 people that will be there for closing ceremonies and that can help break down camp on Sunday at 8am?

5. Alex and I are in the process of getting Safeway gift cards donated to us so that we can have food / snacks / water at our booth for our walkers throughout the relay. We will shop for all food on Friday June 27th. (sandwich fixings, chips, water, gatorade) etc ...

6. Lastly, There are 2 area's the ACS would like us to focus on at the relay.

#1 Promoting ACS programs and activities: Patient services,
Information services, Advocacy, research and Engaging Volunteers.

#2. Increase the community awareness of cancer prevention: Colon Cancer
Screening, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Breast Cancer Screening,
Tobacco Prevention, Skin Cancer Prevention.

We would like each team to choose a "Fight Back" slogan that
is related to one of the above areas and create a banner to be placed
on the fence around the track or in the "Fight Back" tent.
Feel free to be creative!! The banner can be painted on butcher paper,
fabric or whatever you would like - it is a great childrens
activity!! You can use the ACS slogans or come up with your own.
These should be ready to hang early Saturday AM (8-9 am).

Each team should also think of an activity related to your slogan that
can be done sometime during the relay. This activity can be done
during your laps (ie. passing out sunscreen while explaining the
importance of sun protection). You could also choose to play a game
(pop the polyp) near your camping area or on the open areas of the
field. After we find out who is doing what, we will make out a
schedule and your activity will be announced from the stage.

If you can think of a slogan and activity for our team, please email me your idea so that we can submit it at the meeting on Thursday night.

Thats it for now ...

Thank you 911 Angels ... YOU ROCK !!

60 Days Left ...

Congratulations 911 Angels.

Our team has collectively raised $15,000. You ladies ROCK!!!

First off welcome to the team Shirley Paugh and Cindy Hawke. Thank you both for officially joining the 911 Angels.

A special congratulations to the 4 team members who have surpassed their minimum requirement BY FAR: Jennifer, Linda, Teresa and Shirley ... You 4 are true motivators that we are each capable of brining in at least 2k in this fight against breast cancer! Let's DO IT!!!

Wow, 60 Days left and my calendar is FULL of things to do, fundraiser preparations, deadlines, training walks and equipment gear shopping dates. I would REALLY like to get the team together so that we can touch basis on several BIG upcoming fundraisers. Amy Camarillo is in full swing with her Toast 4 a Cure Wine Tasting Benefit scheduled for Friday, June 20th 1700-1900 hours. Please be sure to mark your calendars. It is such a fun event and a great way for us team members to spend fun time together, sipping on wine. Tickets are only $50 each so start soliciting friends and family wine lovers to join us. Amy will have information forth coming about how ticket sales will work.

I'd like to get together this Sunday May 18th for a team meeting. I was going to suggest morning but I prefer the time of day that is most convenient for MOST of the team. Please send me an email to let me know if you will be available Sunday and what time of day is best for you. Sunlight would be good so we can take some team photo's as well.

Other things that need to be discussed are: Equipment/Gear, team tenting, tent partners, Friday night carpool, registration, team meet-up, hotel reservations for Friday night, Training schedule for May/June, Tshirt sales and Team Walking attire and upcoming fundraisers that will benefit every walker on the team. Please try your best to attend the meeting because your input is very much needed.

Thanks,
Keep up the GREAT work and Happy Trails!!!

Spring Is In The Air.

It's the perfect time for team training. If you haven't yet returned your questionnaire sheet that was included in the team packets, please do so asap so we can finalize the most efficient training schedule.

Please feel free to leave comments here with information if you are planning some of your own training walks this week so that other team members may join you.

And don't forget, the Avon Expo is scheduled for Saturday, April 19th in San Francisco. For those of you who have never participated in a walk, I would highly recommend attending the expo because there are some great workshops that will help you answer questions regarding training, packing, and preparing for the weekend of the walk. Prior to the Expo there are 3 training walks scheduled. Do It !!!! We did the 12 mile one and it really prepared us, giving us a taste of the hills of San Francisco AND it feels REALLY GOOD to know that by April 19th you CAN walk 12 miles!! :)

Expo Training Walk "A" (12 Miles) 7:45 AM
Expo Training Walk "B" (9 miles) 8:45 AM
Expo Training Walk "C" (6 miles) 9:30 AM

Follow this link to find additional training walks in the bay area and to RSVP for the above Expo walks: http://walk.avonfoundation.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sanf_training_walks

Personally, I won't be able to attend the training walk this year because I am attending a wedding that day but I do know that both Sandra Stultz and Maria Silva-Martinez are planning on attending. Again, leave comments here if you would like to attend / participate in an EXPO walk and coordinate car pooling!!!

Tara

Hopeful Hearts.

Happy Hearts. Hopeful Hearts.
And Happy Valentines Day, Angels.

In celebration of the national day of Love, I sent out letters to my friends and family announcing my commitment to the 2008 walk, yet again. There's 150 days left exactly until our big walk and now is the time to start fundraising and training.

I have GREAT NEWS! Looks like we are going to have another BIG TEAM this year. With 8 registered team members and another 10 whose expressed interest in joining the team, we are looking at a team of 18-20!!! YAY, another big year!! But that means lots of planning and lots of fundraising in order to meet our team goal of $40k.

We are planning a team meeting the evening of Thursday, Feb 28th. Please plan on attending as we have fundraising ideas and training schedules to plan. We'll also take team photo's at that time. Location and time will be posted by the end of this week.

Enjoy your day with your loved ones, have a Valentine Cupcake and then hit the trails ... Our walk is only 150 days away!!!! That's less than 6 months .. you should start making personal fundraising goals of collecting at least $300 in donations per month until the walk. If you can do that, you'll be set !!!

Don't forget to check back for team updates.

Happy Valentines Day!!

xoxo

Tara
